Welcome
“Gentlemen, do not be dismayed by the great costs incurred by the construction of the waterworks; since the outlay shall overpass, and the benefits will be eternal!…”
appealed the Mayor of Kraków, Józef Dietl, faced with the difficulties caused by the construction of a modern municipal system of waterworks.
On 14th February 1901, after over thirty years of effort and despite setbacks, the first modern waterworks commenced operation in Kraków - one of the most expensive and extensive enterprises undertaken in Kraków at the time. The waterworks, developing together with the city, underwent numerous transformations, changing its organisational structure, its operational area, and the range of tasks it was meant to fulfil.
In 1994, the company was transformed into a joint stock company, under the sole ownership of the municipal treasury, which assumed the new name of “Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji w Krakowie Spółka Akcyjna” (MPWiK w Krakowie S.A.) - “Municipal Waterworks and Sewer Enterprise in Kraków Joint Stock Company”, taking over all rights and obligations of the former “Municipal Waterworks and Sewer Enterprise in Kraków”.
